Same-sex and Interracial Marriage

XKCD is typically a pretty funny comic. This one, though, just made me go “huh, interesting.”

People often say that same-sex marriage now is like interracial marriage in the 60s. But in terms of public opinion, same-sex marriage now is like interracial marriage in the 90s, when it had already been legal nationwide for 30 years.

The other thing that stands out to me is the rate of change of public approval. Interracial marriage went from the bottom around 1957 to majority in 1995, for a 38 year shift. Same-sex marriage went from the bottom around 1985 Рprobably about 10% if we read into a not particularly scientific graph Рto majority in 2011, for only a 26 year shift. I have heard it said that LGBTQ+ rights have been the fastest growing civil rights movement in history, which seems to match my own experience.
